Bringing Childbirth Theory to Life
"For my husband, the birth
simulation gave him a frame of reference for how labor would progress and
what I would be going through. He found this very helpful. For me, having a
better understanding of the pattern of contractions was huge during
transition."
Martha, after the birth of her first child
Labor Simulator is a unique tool for childbirth educators that uses sound
to represent contractions. Changes in the length, spacing, and intensity of
the sound reflect how contractions progress in a real labor. This offers a
vivid way for pregnant moms and their partners to grasp what a typical labor
is like, bringing childbirth theory to life.
Makes It Real for Parents
“Contractions will be 1 minute long and 3 minutes apart”
communicates the theory, but hearing the actual rhythm of the
contractions makes it real.
Labor Simulator helps pregnant moms and their partners prepare
for many other realities of labor, including the ambiguity of early
labor (“Was that a contraction?”), the challenge of transition (“These
contractions are one on top of the other!”), and the blissful relief
that follows delivery.
Makes it Easy for Childbirth Professionals
Labor Simulator is most effective played in its entirety as a
soundtrack to a “mock labor exercise”. By setting the tempo of labor,
Labor Simulator frees you up to talk between contractions about
issues relevant to the different phases of labor. And because the
contraction sound is unpleasant, it encourages your class to practice
various coping techniques.
The product includes a sample teaching outline, suggesting
topics to cover between specific contractions. Examples include:
- What to do in early labor
- When to call the midwife/OB
- Labor rhythms
- Pushing positions.
You can also download a custom teaching outline if you would like to
create your own script.
Labor Simulator has the proportions of a typical first time
labor, but with each phase about much shorter than average. If you don’t
have enough time to play the entire soundtrack, you can use excerpts to
demonstrate the pattern of contractions in a typical labor, or you can
start the simulation in the middle of early labor or at the start of
active labor.
Available in two versions:
- An audio-only DVD
- A downloadable set of
MP3 files for playing on your iPod or other MP3 player.
